Touchscreen is bright and responsive, at first I was worried about the size of the screen, but it is plenty big enough for what it is used for. The built-in games are somewhat entertaining, but after putting a few of the updated emulators on this thing, I couldn't put it down! Music playback works well, the speakers are quite loud for the size of the thing. Video playback works well, but it can be difficult to convert some formats into .avi format. I am a happy customer!

So the GP2X Wiz arrived yesterday and here is the top three down sides:
1st - Not as solid feeling as the F200 model.
2nd - Spare battery not available.
3rd - Some audio in older programs not working.
This could be that the WAV format is no longer supported [unlikely], that the specific sampling rate is outmoded [more likely, I had a heck of a time getting the samples to work the first time], or heaven help me the code needs updating.
The up side-
1st - The unit has a control lock feature like an ipod.
2nd - The unit has a built in mic and a record feature built into the desktop.
3rd - That\'s right, it has a desktop.
4th - The touch screens seems to be way more responsive.
5th - The faster CPU allow it to play .avi files lag free.

Got mine in a couple of days ago. Start with the colecovision emulator ("wizcolem"). It is the easiest to get up and running, and once you see how it works you can get others working more easily. The ebook reader is crude but adequate, the mp3 file player is semi-ok. There's a lot about the comic book reader I don't get just yet. The "tools" are pretty much trash -- it's doubtful you'll find any use at all for them. Don't bother with the leather case or the strap. You can get stuff that's as good or better at any Office Depot or Target which sells small camera cases. You might need a decent stylus though -- the integrated one is a little small.

All in all, a great unit with good hacking potential.

Well built, and a very strong runner.
Emulation is generally spot on, with a few exceptions.
The screen is absolutely beautiful.
D-Pad is great and buttons work fine.

Touch screen feels tacked on and isn't well implemented, but there is little need of it because of the excellent D-Pad controls.

I bought a Wiz when my Dingoo's Dingux Local went belly-up for the 6th time.
I reverted my Dingoo to Native and have the 8-bit emulators running on IT, with my Wiz doing the "heavy lifting".
It works out well for me.

Delivery was fast and communication was great.
This is a good company to deal with.

First off, I disagree about the touch screen not being well implemented. There's a world of difference between adequate software to take advantage of hardware and hardware being poorly made, and the touch screen works precisely as it should with no problems so how exactly can it be tacked on? Silly comments like that confuse potential buyers and for that reason I am correcting Strider's comment.

Not only can you play nes, genesis, master system, tg16, and snes games at full speed but in many cases the emulators are direct ports from the gp2x f-100/f-200 series and have not yet been tweaked for the wiz's 500 mhz processor. There's even a playstation emulator in the works that runs several games at playable speeds.

Here is a list of emulators I've tested with great results:

1. UAE4ALL (Pinball Fantasies/Dreams run perfectly)
2. PocketSnes (Super Punch-Out, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, etc run beautifully)
3. FCEUltra(only one I've had trouble with is Punch-Out).
4. MAME4ALL (nearly all the older hardware games run without a problem).
5. SCUMMVM (has run every adventure game I've tried without problems, including DoTT which would cause occasionally stuttering on my gp2x f-100.

The caveat is that these emulators are re-compiles from earlier GP2x models and therefore have some compatibility issues still. Also, some games aren't emulated yet because they couldn't have been played at a good speed before (Star Fox, for example).

If and when emulator authors get on the ball and start releasing solid tweaked versions of emulators (Picodrive, for example) the wiz will stand head and shoulders above any previous handheld for retro console gaming, nevermind that it plays divx movies out of the box (there are slowdown issues depending on how the movie was encoded but you can find guides on how to make them flawless), mp3/ogg and mod/chiptune players available as well as e-readers and notepad clones.

As far as the controls go I've found it a challenge to get used to the d-pad with my large hands, especially with the l button being so close at the top. After some adjustment though it does become easier and I've found that by relaxing the bend of my thumb in the middle of the pad I get reasonable control without any strain. The buttons are all very responsive which any platform or action gamer will appreciate.

As I mentioned before, the touch screen works as well as you'd expect when very few apps take advantage of it. Mplay (a movie player) allows you to use it to adjust volume and for all of the video buttons and for that it works perfectly. You may notice some lag depending on the application with cursors falling behind but that seems to be an optimization issue.

The audio is very crisp and clear from the two mini-speakers and the volume can be adjusted quite high. I'd say that the audio is about twice as clean sounding as my gp2x f-100 and can be made much louder without distortion.

The O-LED screen is bright and very clear, and to me it has a much nicer picture than either of the previous GP2x handhelds or the Nintendo DS.

Finally, I've found that the included battery pack gives me plenty of hours gaming time (and movie time) compared to earlier Gamepark models, and the convenient usb connector for transferring files to and from your pc doubles as a recharger.

Overall, this is a solid machine that is very, very much worth the price considering all of it's strengths.

The system worked fine but the charging cable did not work. This seems to be a problem for this model.

Love the Wiz. Wish there were more coherent "getting started" docs etc, but given the variety of what is available, I guess it is understandable that you have to hunt around a bit. Still, the device is first rate and I've gotten most of what I want to run working great. Worth the money!!

The Wiz is an excellent little system i bought it mainly for snes and nes, and its absolutely perfect for that meets all my expectations so far. The real kicker for the system is everything it can do beyond that sega, mame, gameboy adv. It's great and runs great. There are a lot of cool games already out for it some old some new and their a lot of fun. It also plays music and videos and the touchscreen is a cool little add on as well. Well worth the money to me best hand-held ive ever owned.

It is very easy to set up emulators, though some are quirky. For instance, the only Neo Geo Pocket Color emulator for the Wiz refuses to run if you change the name of its folder. Certain emulators allow the user to overclock the processor, but given that the processor is fairly fast (533MHz), and Wiz owners generally play older, 2D games, the overclocking function is unnecessary.

The controls are responsive in platformer games, but the ubiquitous quarter circle moves in fighting games are difficult to execute with the D-pad. The buttons require little pressure to activate and don't feel cheap.

In-game color is vivid on the OLED touchscreen, and the stylus is helpful for navigating the Wiz' main menu. Unfortunately, aside from playing the pre-installed games or some ScummVM ROMs, one will have little use for the the touchscreen and stylus. A built-in notepad app or paint app would have been nice, but I still think the touchscreen and stylus add unnecessarily to the cost of the unit, especially considering that there is no Nintendo DS emulator for the Wiz as of this review.

Battery life is decent; my anecdotal testing yielded an average of 6 hours of gameplay on one charge.

The Wiz is a fine handheld console for emulating old school games. I think GPH got on the touchscreen bandwagon without good reason, but at $150 ($30 less than MSRP) the Wiz becomes a good value because of its responsive controls, powerful processor, and ease of use.

I am not only pleased with the Wiz, but also with the incredibly fast shipping. I ordered late on a Friday night and the package was shipped on Saturday. Using the FedEx Express Saver option, I received it the following Tuesday. And Monday was a holiday (MLK day). Thanks GP2X store!

So far I've only used the Amiga emulation, which is pretty damn good for a handheld. I haven't been toubled by any of the "screen-tearing" issues that some users have reported - perhaps the latest firmware has fixed this. There's not a lot in the way of instructions shipped with the unit but I had it up and running without any hassles. I'm impressed - for the price of an ipod I have a complete package that'll play mp3s, movies, and of course all the best console and amiga games! Now all we need is some PDA software for this thing!

Great console for all emulators but MAME4All. Most games work but key games like punchout, NBA Jams and DK do not work properly.

What a great open source hand-held! I got the GP2X Wiz primarily for MAME, Atari 2600, Intellivision and Genesis/Sega CD emulation. It performs admirably, but what I've ended up having the most fun with is emulating those vintage systems I never had a chance to own back in the day. Amstrad CPC and Turbografx systems are my current favorites with Atari ST close behind. The Wiz seems like a solid, well built system and despite it's light weight I don't feel like I'm going to crush it like I do my PSP-3000. The screen it bright and easy to read. The controls are responsive, but do take a little getting used to as they feel somewhat smaller than what I am used too. However a couple of hours playing and anyone should adjust without problems. Printed documentaion is rather lacking, but the enclosed CD is more informative and the internet is a great source as well. If you're thinking about getting a Wiz, just do yourself a favor and get one! I'm certainly glad I did!

Everything I expected from GPX was there. The only thing I was surprised about I was just how small this thing is. I would like it to be more like the size of the F100/200. No complaints though: this is one sweet little machine. It is basically a 500-800 Mhz computer in the palm of your hand. In fact, running the Qtopia desktop, it is a fully functional microcomputer (kinda like a smartphone) with no networking capability. Qtopia is developed by Trolltech - makers of the QT cross platform development framework.

Native games are great. Animatch, Boomshine, commercial demos, buillt-n flash games to test your cognitive abilities - they're all there and you can buy/download more. This little machine plays Quake II smoothly and perfectly.

In a word - if you are looking for a machine to do emulation, you need the GP2X Wiz. You can't beat it for "bang-for-your-buck". It is well worth what you pay for it.

Prompt delivery.

Hardware: So far has held up to everyday use. Either buttons or something else feels loose inside but not been an issue as yet.

Software: Very happy with this so far. Have put on snes/nes/mame/megadrive emulators and they all work great. Lot of help and downloads on gp32x.com. Music playback is fine, and I have replaced my ipod with this for playing tunes on daily commute. Not tried any movie playback yet. All in all an awesome piece of kit!
